About William S. Gibbons: The Institute is named in honor of William S. “Steve” Gibbons, MD, a community orthopedic surgeon who practiced in Marietta, Georgia. Steve contracted follicular lymphoma shortly after entering clinical practice. He battled the disease for over 20 years, participating in multiple clinical trials over this period of time. Despite his illness, he enjoyed a productive career as an orthopedic surgeon, and entertained friends and colleagues constantly with his quick wit and affable attitude. An avid outdoor enthusiast he loved to fish, golf, and ski. He was an inspiration to countless cancer patients, physicians, nurses, friends and family.
